Students embarking on Advanced level programmes will be expected to have achieved 4 or more GCSE grades A*-C. For students who achieve fewer than 4 A*-C we do offer BTEC or OCR National courses that last for a year and lead to the equivalent to 4 GCSEs. These students then often start Advanced level courses in their 2nd year.
A programme of study will usually be made up of three or four Advanced Level subjects in Year 12, although some students may study five. Students may choose to study AS levels, vocational courses or mix them together. In the first year of Advanced courses students study at AS level. If these subjects are continued into Year 13 (and most are) then they are studied to A2 or full Advanced Level. The range of courses reflects the breadth in the curriculum, which we believe students should be offered. There is an excellent range of courses to choose from and the subject information in this prospectus will provide you with more detail on the content, style of teaching and methods of assessment. We are very proud of our level of success and it demonstrates that students can have every confidence that they will achieve the best possible results.
The standard programme advised for most students will be:
The Enrichment Programme supplements your main programme. Year 12 students will be given the opportunity to choose from the following:
We intend that the Enrichment Programme will add breadth to a student's programme of study as well as further accreditation. It will also provide students with the opportunity to give something back to the community and allow students to develop the additional skills which are highly valued by employers and Higher Education. All students will be able to participate in community activities.
General Studies is a course for AS Year 12 students, which aims to deliver a broad education in a wide range of disciplines. It is accredited by an 'A' level General Studies examination after one year. Many Universities accept General Studies as equivalent to any other 'A' level as an entry qualification when they are making conditional offers. Some do not, although a General Studies qualification may still help them gain an offer. All students who fail to achieve the grades required for their conditional place will find that a General Studies grade can help to secure them a place at University. All two year students have the opportunity of achieving a full A level
